Hype is more than a ritual or a simple code of krump: it is its living foundation. It is that pure conversation between the individual and the circle surrounding them. It’s a dialogue of raw energy, of shouts, breaths, and gestures that guide, support, and open the way. In this exchange, one finds the strength to rise, to go beyond one’s limits, until reaching that rare moment when the body is completely freed: liveness—that climax where the soul ignites, where movement becomes truth, and for a brief instant, one feels all-powerful, one is free.

What are the powers of hype, of the session—in other words, of the collective, of solidarity? What is the power of being present for one another, of supporting and encouraging each other? Does hype have an emancipatory power? A liberating one? A transcendent one? A magical one? Can the power of hype kill, or bring back to life? Can krump revive souls crushed by an unjust society?

Without the group, the weight of the dance does not exist. Hype is inseparable from krump—it is its soul. With the previous piece, bullet time, a formal exploration began around expressions of self-defense, of violent or non-violent response to systemic brutality. This work continues with Hype Is Murda, which, in an Afrofuturist vein, invents the genre of krump-fiction.
