POP UP

Combining illusions created before the audience’s very eyes with hand-crafted trompe-l’œil, this hybrid theatrical production explores the theme of discernment : how can I tell whether what I perceive is real or imagined ? Is it even possible ? Did I really see that ?

Creation
POP UP

At the heart of the piece lies a page from a book of origami models, scaled to the performers’ size and brought to life by them. Initially, there is this ‘blank page’ on which one can make out white modules laid flat. Subsequently, they serve as set design, a moving backdrop and a performance partner; they unfold, transform and become a shelter, a landscape, a space for adventure.

The children witness a gradual revelation, much like that of a world waiting to be explored. Abstract forms emerge from these modules to become elements of the set or costumes; the performers engage with them, inhabit them, organise them and thus create a wordless narrative made up of transformations and surprises.

What if the story of our lives could fold, unfold and transform like a moving body or a pencil stroke on a blank page ?
