Hype Is Murda

Hype Is Murda is a response to racist police violence, armed only with the immortal, indomitable energy of our krumping bodies and the magic of our hyping voices.

Creation
Hype is murda

Hype is more than a ritual or a simple code of Krump: it is its living foundation. It is the pure conversation between the individual and the circle around them. It is a dialogue of raw energy, shouts, breaths and gestures that guide, support and pave the way. In this exchange, we find the strength to rise above ourselves, to exceed our limits, until we reach that rare moment when the body is completely liberated: liveness, that climax where the soul catches fire, where movement becomes truth and, for a brief moment, we feel superpowered, we are free.

What are the powers of hype, of the session, in other words, of the collective, of solidarity? What is the power of being there for each other, of supporting and encouraging each other? Does hype have an emancipatory power? Is it liberating? Transcendent? Magical? Can the power of hype kill or bring back to life? Can krump revive souls killed by an unjust society?

Without the group, the weight of the dance does not exist. Hype is inseparable from krump. It is its soul. With the previous piece, bullet time, we began a formal exploration of expressions of self-defence, of violent/non-violent responses to systemic brutality. The work continues with Hype Is Murda, which, in the Afro-futurist tradition, invents the krump-fiction genre.
